benefit fundraiser for Pumpkin Records - Matt Martin and his partner Billie have been forced out of Bulgaria where they have been living for the past 5 years due to a completely corrupt government that has literally been emptying their bank accounts using made-up legislation. Matt has been involved in Pumpkin Records for about 20 years, he also cuts records using a lathe and does mastering work for bands. Billie is a self-employed jewelry maker - and they are having to move back to the UK as a result of all of this bullshit.

"For anyone wanting context from my post the other day, here’s what’s been happening.
The governments finance department (NRA / Tax Office / ТД на НАП) here in Bulgaria are extorting us using fabricated laws and stealing money directly from our bank, without our knowledge or consent. I'll write it in sections to hopefully make it clear.

We run a successful business, we send many packages each month internationally, however due to this the state have been targeting us and investigation us for the past 2 years. In Bulgaria, every package you send is tracked via your Lichna (ID) card and all information regarding shipments get's logged and is accessible by the state, so therefore they see that we are doing well, thus a good business to extort. Not only are these investigations time consuming, talking many days off from work to sort it, we also have to pay for them financially.

After the investigations came to an end and they could not extort us for any kind of fraud, they have finally resulted to fabricating legislation (it appears anyway...). They say that we owe them 7540 leva for VAT on NON EU sales. For anyone who doesn’t understand VAT law, VAT is ONLY for EU sales, non EU sales are exempt, it is the same in every country.

Last week, without us receiving any letter, form of communication, or any knowledge whatsoever, the government took the money from our bank account. This is theft and is surely highly illegal, I find it impossible to believe that anyone is allowed to go into your bank and take your money, including money you do not have. We are now 7000 leva in debt with the bank.

If we are unable to clear the debt, we are forced into bankruptcy which means the state can then seize our assets. Our assets include housing and all work stuff, record cutting lathes, metalsmith workshop and so on.

We have now paid €1000 into the bank to help with the debt, however the government took another €700 of it and left us with just €300. We have no idea why. They seem to just be siphoning money off as they please.

We are now unable to work to pay this off, as we are in debt to the bank, so can not make any payments to buy stock or ship anything, totally stuck.

The government has not provided proof of anything, simply telling us what they want, we assume as it is all totally fabricated. They next step is to move away from Bulgaria, secure our house and work tools before the Government seizes them and start a fresh in a country that will let us operate and make money to give away to human and animal rights organisations without extorting us, or worse, stealing money directly from our banks without our knowledge or consent.

I know never to trust the state and that they are of course thieves, but didn't think it was that easy to just clear bank accounts out..."
